Shower glass guide

Chips, loose hardware, seals or leaks: who should assess the shower?

Glass appearance, door operation and escaping water need different assessments. Damaged glass and an active leak take priority over cosmetic restoration. Describe what you can see safely, then contact the appropriate professional.

A shower can have cloudy glass and a separate repair problem at the same time. Removing haze will not establish that a panel, hinge, seal or waterproofing assembly is sound. Start by separating the visible concern from the work you hope to book.

This original editorial checklist helps route an enquiry. It does not diagnose a leak, certify an enclosure as safe or provide instructions for dismantling or adjusting glass.

Put damaged glass and active water escape first

If you see a crack, chip or damaged edge, stop using the affected enclosure and seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified glass professional. Delta warns that cracks and chips can lead to tempered-glass breakage and advises against using a damaged panel. Delta, shower-glass safety.

If water is escaping the shower or appearing in another area, stop shower use and contact the responsible owner or building manager and an appropriate repair professional. Do not keep running the shower merely to produce a clearer video. In a multi-unit building, use the building's emergency contact when an active leak needs prompt attention.

BC Housing's leak-prevention bulletin distinguishes identifying the source, damage response and repair, and directs multi-unit residents to their building's emergency arrangements. Water-damage remediation is a different service from restoring the appearance of glass. BC Housing, Preventing Water Leaks in Your Home.

The first contact may refer the matter onward. A visible puddle does not establish whether the cause is a door seal, plumbing connection, drain, enclosure installation or another assembly. Let the investigation determine the repair scope.

Why hardware and seals need the correct model

Shower-door components have particular positions, clearances and parts. Kohler's installation and care manual for its listed pivot-door models distinguishes door-function problems, seals and different leak locations. It also warns about damaged or loose parts. This illustrates the value of model-specific instructions, not a repair method for every shower. Kohler pivot-door installation and care manual.

Do not loosen hinges, remove clips, lift a panel, force a catching door or improvise a replacement seal to investigate it. Do not assume applying more sealant will identify or resolve an unknown water path. Give the installer a chance to inspect the complete system before cosmetic work obscures the condition.

Document without testing the failure

  1. Record the location. Name the panel, fitting or area where water was first noticed. Keep observations separate from a suspected cause.
  2. Note the timing. Say whether the issue appeared during use, afterwards or while the shower was unused.
  3. Keep relevant records. Find the model label, installation invoice and any previous repair notes.
  4. Photograph only from safe access. Do not touch a damaged edge or operate unstable glass to obtain evidence.
  5. Report the issue. Tell the responsible person what is happening and keep the agreed next step in writing.

For rental homes, the Province's current maintenance guidance tells tenants to report water damage promptly to their landlord. Follow the applicable repair and emergency-contact process rather than assuming a cosmetic-service booking will address it. BC rental repairs and maintenance.

Return to appearance once the repair question is clear

After the relevant professional has addressed the safety or water issue, discuss any remaining haze separately. Our restoration decision guide and photo checklist can help describe that work. For an appearance enquiry, request a shower-glass quote or call (778) 776-2800.

Send photos before you replace the shower glass.

We'll review the haze, water spots, panel count, and coating fit before scheduling a restoration quote.
